I notice on Page 12 regarding the production of "Staircase" the journals reference to Rex Harrison and Richard Burton as a couple of "Q" barbers. They're hairdressers, dearie. Hairdressers!!

Thanks for the interesting link, Rick. I don't think any of those 1960s 'stadium' type ABC cinemas have survived. They were certainly the place to see a 70mm presentation with stereophonic sound. The cinema industry has certainly gone down the pan since those days.

The word 'Gay' meaning 'Good as you' hadn't yet been coined in 1968. Nevertheless, Staircase was very badly cast. I can't think of two well known heterosexual men less suited to playing a Gay couple than Burton and Harrison.

What about Oliver Reed as a camp actor in The League of Gentlemen (1960)?

Ah, but the public hardly knew Reed at that time, so for all anybody knew, he could well have been like the part he was playing. Time proved he was the complete opposite.

The ABC Doncaster still exists as a building but functions as a nothing since 2010 so I understand.

The ABC Bristol Road here in Birmingham (although not in the stadium style since not a new build) was the biggest tragedy. Cinerama in its time, too.

We had a stadium type ABC here in Stoke on Trent, opened as the ABC Cine-Bowl, Hanley, in August, 1963. Superb presentation while it lasted. It was tripled in 1977 and closed in 2000 and demolished. A Tesco supermarket and car park now occupies the site. The ABC Hanley was built in the same style and at around the same time as the ABC Sheffield, which has also gone now.
