Renown Pictures Ltd Film Club Newsletter

May 2014

Dear Club Members,

We had a great email last month from John G. Acton, OBE LRAM, which we would like to share with you. John is 93 years old but was 16 when he appeared with thirteen other Juvenile Pianists in our film 'Talking Feet'. Says John, I was excited beyond measure when my eldest son Thomas presented me with a copy of your remastered film, 'Talking Feet'. Am I the sole survivor of the 14 Juveniles? I am hoping I might contact one or two and let them know of this wonderful film of the past. If any of our club members know of any other cast members do get in touch. John writes an online blog about his experiences go to

This month we have two very interesting releases. Firstly, another LOST film, One of the 75 Most Wanted Films listed by the British Film Institute as Missing, believed lost, which, thankfully, Renown has found 'Its in the Bag' with a Free Bonus Colour Short, 'Miss McTaggart Wont Lie Down'. Also, 'Thunder Rock', starring Michael Redgrave in one of his finest performances.

Next month we bring you 'Sons of the Sea', the only British film shot in Dufaycolour along with some Club Members Special Titles. Do keep your requests coming.

Best wishes, Noel, Sarah & Neill

Our first release for May 2014

'Thunder Rock'

An excellent supernatural drama starring Michael Redgrave.

... ('Thunder Rock') succeeds in creating an atmosphere that is at once haunting, mournful and inspiring. As a writer disillusioned by the worlds complacent response to fascism, Michael Redgrave gives one of his most complex and tormented performances, as he regains the crusading spirit from his encounters with the victims of a shipwreck that occurred years before on the rocks near the lighthouse he now tends. With a bullish contribution from James Mason and truly touching support from ghostly migr Lilli Palmer, this is one of the Boulting brothers finest achievements.

CLUB MEMBERS SPECIAL OFFER

'The Silver Darlings'

A rugged tale of the life of herring fishermen set on the remote North East coast of Scotland. These fishermen refer to the herring as their Silver Darlings. The men who risk their lives daily, at sea, also face the peril of the British Navy press gangs who prey on the small crofting communities along the coastline. Helen Shingler plays Catrine, the wife of a fisherman who was pressed into service by the navy and never returned. She is pursued by Roddie, (Clifford Evans), the lead figure in the fishing community. Catrines only son Finn, (Murdo Morrison), warms to the relationship after a dramatic cliff rescue where Roddie risks his own life to save the boy.
