I watched the first in the new series of the Scandinavian drama 'Crimes of Passion' and it looked very nice in full Panavision 2.35:1. I then caught just a little of the second episode and this was shown in 16:9. - the normal TV widescreen.

I can't believe that the producers decided to change format during the run of the series so can only conclude that BBC4 for its own reasons decided to do so. We are all aware of how the networks treat Feature films on broadcast choosing an aspect ratio for their own reason with scant regard for the cameraman and director's compositions. I wonder, though, if this the first time that it has happened to a TV original as normally they are transmitted as shot.

Does anyone recall having seen a mid-series change of shape on previous programmes?

The differing aspect ratios appear to be correct. The first episode was made to be released as a feature film in Swedish cinemas. The rest were made for DVD/on demand.
