It featured a very young Alun Armstrong and some other notable actors from the North East region (the names of which escape me), and which focuses on the lives of a group of teachers who endeavour to entertain some unruly kids whilst out on a school trip.

May have been from the 1970s or even earlier. Cheers!

I was in that at school, playing the Armstrong part would you believe. Nice to know I was an old fuddy duddy even at 15. We changed the setting to Birmingham, though.

When I first read the question, I thought it might be Armstrong in Alan Plater's Get Lost! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Get_Lost! , the sort of prequel to the sublime The Beiderbecke Affair. Now I'll have to track down Our Day Out as well - thanks for the tip!

"Our Day Out" was wonderful and for me Alun Armstrong stole the show. I watched when it was first broadcast in the late 70s and it stuck with me ever since as a funny, powerful, well-acted piece.

I remember almost thirty years later eagerly anticipating a forthcoming TV film, "Mr. Harvey Lights A Candle" starring Timothy Spall. From the write up it seemed to have a lot of resonance with "Our Day Out", but I was so disappointed when I saw it. Thoroughly depressing.
