    Hello all,

Sorry if this question comes over as a bit vague. My wife and I have been tormented for years by the identity of a particular actress from, we think, some old Carry On films. We might have this wrong, though, and she could be in Ealing comedies instead. However, I'm sure it's the Carry Ons.

In any case, the only way I can describe her is as a female Charles Hawtrey (no, it's definitely not Hawtrey in drag!). She always plays the same kinds of role - little oldish shocked woman. She has a very 'mousey' face, tiny eyes, reedy little voice. Never a lead, always a bit part.

I've gone through the casts of the Carry Ons several times but can't seem to find her! If nobody has a clue then I'll just chalk this up to a mass delusion on the part of both my wife and myself.

    Hope you can help!

My first thought was Esma Cannon but if not, Lucy Griffiths is a possibility, if only because she went uncredited in some of those she appeared in.

Edie Martin was certainly in Ealing films, but never in a Carry On film, whereas Esma Cannon was in both Ealings and Carry Ons.

Such great guesses, guys, on all three but, alas, not the actress I'm after.

I just can't fathom it. We've trawled the cast lists. She definitely has speaking parts. Tiny shrew-y woman.

I think we're going to have to watch all the early Carry Ons. There are worse fates, I suppose.

    Thanks again!

If you give us a clue as to how many approximate minutes in the mystery woman appears in the early Carry-on's, some of us may be able to help, I have a few of the black and white ones on VHS

Esma Cannon ("Mousey face, tiny eyes") and Edie Martin, with horn-rimmed (Charles Hawtrey-like) glasses:

Using Movie Dude's excellent resource (thanks Movie Dude), we've discovered that my wife was looking for Ann Way (Carry On Loving, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie

    18049.jpg

    HOWEVER ...the plot thickens.

This is not the actress I was thinking about! Incredible, really, all these years and we've been describing two different women in exactly the same terms. Ah well, at least now my wife is happy. The search continues. Thanks for all your help guys.

So we're still looking for another actress?

How about Rosalind Knight, she appeared in Carry on Teacher and Nurse, she's still acting.

I was surprised to learn that Rita Webb was never in a Carry On. She was small but very stout, so probably not the right lady.
