Great pictures, Stephen. I wonder if the Gaumont, Sheffield, is still there after 46 years.

No chance DBF, as you will see from this report here

The Gaumont Bournemouth seen in Stephen;s previous posting is on a knife-edge regarding demolition too.

My memories of the Gaumont are a school trip to see 'The Song of Norway'. It must have been in Cinerama, but even that didn't save the film for me.

Long queues outside for anything popular during the summer holidays and just how empty it felt for anything unpopular.

Oh, what a shame. I don't suppose there are many of the traditional 'Picture Palaces' still around nowadays.

I remember showing Song of Norway in the early 1970s. It was in 'Scope and colour and the scenery was beautiful, yet the film itself was incredibly boring and the songs were unmemorable.

Apparently this film is what Bowie was eluding to in his song 'Life on Mars', his then girlfriend had broke his heart, left him and had a part in the film.

Interesting to see the old JICTAR ratings lists which were also religiously printed in TV Times every week. Organised by ITV, they always showed ITV programmes dominating the top ten ratings. Funny that. Later superseded by BARB.

Song of Norway was indeed an awfully boring film, but this didn't prevent it from playing the Casino Cinerama for more than a year (Dec 10th 1970 to Feb 2nd 1972)!

If you look at the most recent post, News at Ten for Tuesday is the highest rated show. Now I know it's the one show that was networked on ITV, but "puuuuh .. lease", they really expect us to buy that!
