Trying to remember an episode of Thriller or maybe Armchair Theatre. A married couple lose a son in the army. One day a man turns up either claiming to be the son or offering to live with them as their son. The father builds a secret soundproof room in the house in case anyone turns up looking for the new son. The room is completely self contained and crucially, cannot be opened from the inside, only the outside. The new son is actually an imposter trying to swindle the parents out of their money and he plans to poison them. Everything is going well when the Army turn up suddenly and imposter son is sent to the safe room and locked in, but he has prepared a poison drink (or food) for the parents. After the panic is over, the parents take the poison drink planning to open the secret room later in case anyone comes back. They die, he's in the room and can't get out, no one can hear his cries for help and presumably, he starves to death. Might have been a Tales of the Unexpected. Hope I've remembered it correctly. Anyone ?

It sounds like the Thriller episode 'In The Steps of a Dead Man.

The parents are played by Richard Vernon and Faith Brook. The man who turns up and claims to be their dead son's friend was played by John Nolan.

Thanks Joe. Seems like the one but none of the write ups I've read mention the secret room. Anyone seen this episode who can confirm it? I could have mixed up two episodes.

I'm watching it right now, partly down to the intriguing description you gave and partly by way of tribute to the late Brian Clemens - and it's the one you're thinking of

If it does not turn out to be that one-it might be this one?

    Same here.
I worked my way through the "Thriller" box set a few years back but the postings here mean I will have to dig out "In The Steps Of A Dead Man" again.

It is this one, & it's one of my favourites, stands up well to repeated viewings.
