Caution - this may contain spoilers if you haven't seen the film!

I've not seen his for years, so any of the following maybe wrong.

    British film.

    Black and white.

    1930s-1950s.

Something to do with the relationship between a sailor and a boy/boys who may be his son (estranged?).

They ultimately end upon a boat - possibly a trawler - caught in a storm.

The mast collapses, trapping the sailor and threatening to sink the boat - in an act of self-sacrifice the trapped sailor instructs the crew to cut the mast away with an axe, thus saving all on-board, but with the mast dragging him under to his death.
