Many thanks for posting those rare articles and pictures, DBF
Leonard Mosley's review of Payroll (Daily Express, 21st April 1961):
As fate would have it, the Daily Mirror archives have reproduced the following day's issue twice (no 21st).
The Friday newspaper surely included Dick Richards' review. Not happy about missing the TV page either ...
Great film when I first saw it and still great today!!
Wasn't it an X when it was first released?
cornershop: Thanks for the Daily Express review. I've long been of the opinion that some film critics in those days were miserable sods who didn't like films and never had a kind word to say about them.
Merton Park: It was an 'A' film when I went to see it in 1961, but according to the BBFC website, it was cut in order for it to get an 'A', so originally it may have been much longer and could have originally been considered for an 'X' certificate. I shall check the original running time from Kine Weekly and Film Review annual.
UPDATE: Kine Weekly has it listed as an 'A' film running 105 minutes when it was originally released on May 22nd, 1961 and Film Review annual has it down as 106 minutes. But this equates with the 102 minutes on the present DVD, allowing for the PAL speed-up.

Anglo made some great crime films in the early sixties
I'm expecting three more vintage press stills from Payroll by the end of next week. So look out for me uploading them here. Naturally, the British stills are coming from dealers in America on account of you can't get anything like that in this country. You should be able to, but you can't.
Great shots of the lovely Francoise, Darrenburnfan.
Yes, she was gorgeous, wasn't she, Edward? I envied Michael Craig being able to kiss her like he did. Some guys have all the luck!
