That premise seems rather reminiscent of 'The Colonel's Lady' in the W. Somerset Maugham anthology film Quartet (1848).
This was posted on i Remember This Movie.
Hi, hoping someone can help here, as I have been trying to track this film down for ages.
This black & white comedy( ?)film played very late at night on ITV, probably around 1997, but was made (I assume) in the 1950s or so.
The premise was this: A girl had been writing stories using her uncle(?) as the main character, making him out to be this wonderful romantic, perfect man. The uncle happened to be the town/village doctor. The story/stories wound up being published as a book and when the townsfolk got wind of it all the women there thought the stories were true and were besotted by the doctor.
The scene I remember once the book was published was the doctor/uncle arriving at his practise in the morning and it was rammed with women waiting to be seen for appointments. He was well baffled.
This is all I remember, other than I loved the film. I also think that the title of the film was also the title of the book that the girl had published (although I could be mistaken there).
Thanks.
Amb.

Checking it, that doesn't seem to be what the OP described. The premise sounds vaguely similar to me also, although I can't think of from what.
I think I just found it.
Please Turn Over (1959)
EDIT
I looked at the Wikipedia entry and that's it. The doctor part is a subplot and not the main part of the story.

Just seen this thread and was about to reply to it with Please Turn Over when I saw that you'd got it already.
You knew it. I had to screw around with the IMDb search engine until I found a word that got me to it.
I well remember going to see it at the ABC Golders Green. (says he giving his age away !!!)
