Yes, unbelievably he has, so it will only be a matter of time before the Big One.Originally Posted by EHV_Emmetts
Parkinson was OK, but how could they consider Honoring him, and overlooking Richard Todd? it would have been so fitting for him to have got it when he reached 90.

Wogan was awarded an honorary knighthood in the Queen's Birthday Honours in 2005. After becoming a British citizen that year, the knighthood was made substantive on 11 October, 2005, allowing him to use the style "Sir".Originally Posted by CaptainWaggett

I know Barbara has her fans on this site, so I may well be in the minority on this, but whilst watching the Eastenders live edition I wondered how she has managed to get away with it all these years. In the Carry Ons all she seemed to contribute was a silly laugh and a flash of boob, and she appears to snarl her way through Eastenders. Others no doubt will have their own opinion on the actor/actress (covering my options, Ray!)

As for "Eastenders", I personally can't bear the programme. I rate it way down with the awful reality TV shows. So in fairness to Barbara, it is probablly the scripts that let her down rather than just her acting. It's the same for Samantha Janus and Rudolph Walker. Their talents are wasted on what I think is without doubt the worst soap.
wellendcanons.
I am a great fan of the Carry On films and admire the work of Barbara Windsor. Lets not forget she received her MBE in 2000 which was well deserved but I agree that a Damehood is perhaps going a little too far!
I think it sad that so many of her Carry On colleagues were overlooked when it came to Honours, in particular the late Joan Sims (a far greater actress with more credits to her name).
I can usually take or leave Ms Windsor, and find most of her
work (ie Carry On's) to be very shallow,BUT in fairness she
was doing what the script asked of her. The revelation for
me was her two short scenes in my favourite film,Bill Douglas'
'Comrades' (recently released on DVD for the first time)which
details the story of the Tolpuddle Martyrs.
As the wife of a local shopkeeper, her acting is very good,as
she is by turns baffled and horrified,at the request of George
Loveless (superbly portrayed by Robin Soans) to make up a
'banner' featuring a skeleton, to represent the union or 'friendly
society' being formed by the Tolpuddle men. Fair credit to the
lady for her sensitive acting in these scenes!
I think that's a bit unfair. You could reduce any single member of the Carry On team's contribution to a dismissive one line summary - it sort of misses the point. They all had their fixed persona, and had to play off each other's characters. Windsor's was no more or less simple than the others. I think, within the context of the Carry Ons, she was as brilliant as all of them. Outside the Carry Ons, there may be a different argument, but in that environment, when it wasn't Windsor, it wasn't as funny.Originally Posted by Joenoir
I agree. She isn't a favourite of mine but she has been in the public eye entertaining people for about fifty years.Originally Posted by CaptainWaggett
Ray - the problem is that when people like Richard Todd aren't working, the public, and indeed honours system, forget who they are. A lot of it must be down to public nominations. Norman Newell was honoured not too long before he died, and he hadn't worked in years. I think I remember reading at the time that one of his friends had sent in a nomination.
As I said it is only my opinion, I don't expect you or anyone else to agree with it. I quite like Babs as a personality, but my opinion was based on having seen her recently in some of the Carry Ons and thinking that she didn't contribute as much as the other actors.Originally Posted by Rowdon
Fair enough. I wasn't disagreeing, so much as ... em ... not agreeing, if you know what I mean.Originally Posted by Joenoir
babs was perfect for those films i myself have worked in pinewood studios many years ago and got to meet peter rogers and gerald thomas while working in the mail room there
happy times
Anyone who has survived Sid James and East Enders deserves a medal. I wish they would delete references to the British Empire it has the feel of those cheesy Ruritania located movies. That said, I would think some public recognition would be fitting as there is some longevity in the practising of her art. To last this long does require considerable talent.
I agree Bernardo. I'd be very proud to be recognised in such a way by my country.
But surely she would be at the back of a very long queue?!

One of my favourite pics of the lovely Barbara Windsor ........
I struggle to understand why entertainers that become popular and earn millions deserve KBE/DBEs.
However I do think Joanna Lumley was overlooked this year for her magnificent ghurka campaign.
But Barbara Windsor who ate the scenery throughout EastEnders? Nope.
