Hi all,

This thread is about prison centered documentaries, a genre I find really interesting. Wondering which ones you know of / would reccomend and whether you can advise on how to get copies.

Did anyone watch the two part doc called Lifers a few years back. It showed interview footage in the 70s with various lifers, then the same interviewer went and spoke to them in 2000. Was interesting to see the varying rates of progress they had made in terms of rehabilitation and how what their opinions were on the prison system. I have these on tape.

Also remember a re-run quite a few years back which looked like a 1970s fly on the wall documentary in a British prison - know nothing else about it.

One other I would be interested in was a documentary on those prisoners who have murdered other prisoners - think it focused quite a lot on a bloke called Fred??!!

    Anyway, cheers.

    Hi TheDirector

The 1970s fly-on-the-wall documentary you're thinking of must surely be a series called Strangeways from 1980. I'm not too sure how many episodes there were (does anyone know?) but the first two episodes were repeated on BBC2 in 2000 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the series. There was also a Timewatch special programme entitled Strangeways Revisited which revisted the prison and the inmates who were part of the original series 20 years earlier. I recorded all three programmes.

    ...if you're interested in these.

    regards,

    Remy

Strangeways originally consisted of eight episodes - the first ran 40 minutes, so it's a safe bet the others did too. Original transmission dates (it was shown on BBC1) and titles were:

    29/10/1980 - Human Warehouse

    05/11/1980 - The Allegation

    12/11/1980 - Screws

    19/11/1980 - Cons

    26/11/1980 - The Block

03/12/1980 - They Call Us Beasts

    11/12/1980 - Borstal Boys

    17/12/1980 - Christmas

    Thanks Wetherby Pond

I'll have to check but I'm probably wrong that BBC2 repeated the first 2 episodes back in 2000. I remember the 2nd and final repeat was set at christmas time so perhaps they showed the first and last episodes. It's a crime they didn't show the whole series. Shame on you BBC2

For those interested, the two episodes repeated on BBC2 on the 19/5/01 and 20/5/01 respectively were The Allegation and Christmas.

Timewatch: Strangeways Revisited was shown on 25/5/01
