My mother has a burning question about a film that she believes Alec Guinness was in - the plot is something about him having his fortune read, and being told that, past a certain stage, there is nothing - implying he's going to die at a certain time. In the end, he dies in his sleep because his kitten accidentally turns on the gas whilst he's asleep. Does this ring a bell with anyone?

Looks like you've got the panel stumped on this one. Not so much as a tinkle here, I'm afraid.

Diane - part of the plot sounds a bit like Guinness's film Last Holiday

I agree Rob - I thought LAST HOLIDAY, till we got to the kitten bit. Can't think of anything remotely similar in that aspect...

I can partly remember seeing this film on television in the early 60s it was only a short film around 30 minutes or so & I think it was part of some mystery theatre anthology.I can remember the man going to the fortune teller who told him he will die on a particular day. It looks as if he his going to prove her wrong but around midnight the kitten turns the gas tap on the fire.the film then ends.

I am not sure though if the actor was Alec Guinness but of course I could be wrong.

Thanks very much so far, everyone. My mother (obviously slightly confused!) is now saying that it may well not have been Alec Guinness. So that may help, possibly ....
