Just watching this cracking film, but I think I must always have missed the opening credits; under the music, interweaved with the cast credits are excerpts of silent Shakespeare. I wasn't entirely sure the clips were genuine until I recgnised two from Sir Johnston's Forbes-Robertson's 1913 Hamlet (one being the swordfight where the sword is being returned) - so I assume the others are as genuine as they looked. One was a very impressive looking Othello....does anyone have a book or know of a site that lists the source films for the clips??? I know I'm in a minority here as regards silents, but Theatre of Blood is a real cult classic so I'm hoping someone can help out...

The British Film Institute have a DVD in their catalogue SILENT SHAKESPEARE (BFIVD 654) which is a compilation of early Shakespeare films from the National Film Archive. I would imagine that most if not all the clips you are interested in would be on it

    See the BFI website www.bfi.org.uk

Thanks; I have the VHS version; that's where I knew the Hamlet from; but didn't recognise the rest...

The Bfi issue I have contains:

King John, Tempest, MidsummerND, Lear, 12th night,Merchant oV , RichardIII.

    Lear and MOV are colourised.

There is no Hamlet on my copy. Perhaps there is another issue.

As for Theatre of Blood, I always think of Vincent Price as a camp, hammy actor, but in this film in which he plays a camp, hammy actor he is, at times, genuinely moving!
