**ANYTHING** penned by Edgar Wallace is worth watching!

Circus Of Fear. 1966. Directed by John Moxey
This film, based on the novel by Edgar Wallace, was originally released in America as Psycho-Circus in Black & White and cut by 22 minutes.
The DVD I have is the full colour "never-before seen directors cut" on the Blue Underground label.
Starring Christopher Lee , Suzy kendall and Klaus Kinski - what begins as a risky armoured car robbery on London's Tower Bridge leads the investigating officer to a mysterious circus where a disfigoured lion tamer is one of the suspects in a series of grisly cover up murders.
Anyone else a fan of this film?

Wasn't this a Harry Allan Towers production? I think the German version (it was a UK/German co-production) has a slightly different supporting cast. From the BBC transmissions in the past I remember a rather good robbery sequence at the start. So, what does the new footage consist of?
Cheers.

Yes, I too am a fan of this film. Nice role for Chris Lee.(U.V.RAY @ Feb 6 2006, 11:24 AM)

This DVD - is it Region 1 ? Is that why it's a never-before-seen version ?

I dimly remember watching and enjoying EW Mysteries on TV when I was a child, introduced by a smoke-shrouded bust, but really don't know anything about them. Were they a series proper or were they just a selection of films based on his stories gathered under a "series" identity?
More importantly, what films were in the series! I enjoyed them a lot.
To answer some questions:
I didn't see the early BBC televised version to compare it to, I am afraid.
Yes, at the start of the film there is a quite thrilling robbery on Tower Bridge whereby a Securicor van is robbed in which one security guard is shot dead and one taken hostage - just for good measure the two police officers who attempt to intervene are tear-gassed in their patrol car before the team shimmy down a rope and make their escape on an awaiting boat.
This DVD is on NTSC, is unrated and, as I said, released on the Blue Underground label.
Extras include commentary with the director, John Moxey, theatrical trailers and actor bios.
It's a great DVD and for those who haven't seen the film and like thriller/mysteries I do recommend it.
From the back of the DVD:
CIRCUS OF FEAR was originally released in America as Psyco-Circus in B&W and cut by more than 22 minutes. Blue Underground has restored the film to its full running time from a stunning British colour negative and added a long-lost 8 minute sequence recently discovered in a storage vault.
I also recommend the DVD, from Blue Underground and it's extra material. I would be surprised to find an alternative version with a more German cast. It was German enough and some cast member was in a balaclava so he could have esily been dubbed.
I like how it starts as a straight robbery before the film takes a more sinister cinematic turn.
