Does anyone else remember "The Machine Stops", a dramatisation of an E M Forster short story, shown on the Beeb in the late 60s I think. Quite a prophetic tale as it was written early in the 20thC and pre-empts our modern www world (and its collapse!). If anyone has this on VHS PAL or DVD, would love to trade - or does anyone know where it might be available?

    Cheers!

I was a kid when I saw 'The Machine Stops' and it impressed me very much - I never forgot it, and always wanted to see it again. It was shown at the NFT a few years ago, but I couldn't get tickets for it, much to my disappointment and annoyance!

It was an episode of the BBC series 'Out Of The Unknown', first shown in October 1966 (repeated April 67). It starred Yvonne Mitchell and Michael Gothard, directed by Philip Saville.

Only a few episodes of OOTU still survive - 'The Machine Stops' is obviously one of them, and in pretty reasonable nick if it can be shown at the NFT.

I remember Out of the Unknown - a brilliant series, at least the first two were. Most of the stories were

adaptations of works by quite well known authors. The Machine Stops was one of the best- I think the

NFT has an arrangement with the BBC, as do schools and colleges, to access stuff that is unobtainable

    on the market.

The best OOTU story, in my biased opinion, was the version of Kate Wilhelms ' Andover and the

Android ', which was so well received it was repeated a few weeks later and saved the whole series

    from being pulled.

Any chance there's a recording of that out there ? I live in hope !

Yes, I remember this story so well, funny how it has stuck in my mind after just seeing it once 40 years ago!

I note that the BBC has this listed as "missing", but I'm sure I have seen it listed on an (expensive) compilation DVD on eBay (USA) fairly recently - or is my memory failing me? Wished I'd bought it now! If anyone does see this listed anywhere please post details here!!!!

Maybe I should have REJECT stamped on my forehead too!

I have a copy of "The Machine Stops" on DVD but the quality is pretty awful I'm afraid (see screen capture), still watchable though. I also have a number of other episodes of "Out of the Unknown".

Alright, I guess I'll post this publicly-- I'm looking for this too, but I have nothing to trade (unfortunately). If you have it and you're willing to discuss, please PM me.

EDIT: I've got a copy on its way. Thank you, everyone! I'll make sure to keep this circulating as well.

    Hi,

I'd love to get a copy of The Machine Stops as it's one of my favorite short stories. I'm afraid I'm new to this trading/collecting, so I don't know what I'd be able to offer in return, but if anyone feels like helping out, please contact me.

    Thanks in advance.
