    Lewis Gilbert in his excellent autobiography tells the story of how he was scheduled to direct Oliver and how gutted he was to have pull out due to a contract with Paramount. He did however suggest that Carol Reed should take over and also had a hand in casting and testing the actors.

    It would have been interesting to see what Lewis Gilbert would have done with Oliver! and even more interesting to see whether or not he would have got a Best Director Oscar for it if he had directed it.

    ^ Yes. It would have been interesting to see what Lewis Gilbert could have done with it.

    I think all the musical numbers were pre-recorded on to a 4 or 6-Track Westrex Recording System, so that the film director was hamstrung in choosing what happens on screen in all those long song and dance sequences. The actor's performance and their positioning on screen is dictated by to which microphone they were singing.
