I was able to get in contact with Richard Wain who runs the John Gregson website and was able to find out the details surrounding JG's death.
Apparantly John Gregson and family were on holiday at Porlock Weir at the time.
There is a steep hill there that leads down to the port. John Gregson suffered the fatal heart attack as he climbed back up the hill.
Gregson had also suffered a heart attack two years prior to his fatal attack.
Richard Wain says that he has lots more information about Gregson that he plans to add to the website in the next few months.
Dave.
Absolutely thrilled a junior family member of his has set up a website about him. Always gave me a warm fuzzy watching his characters. What a lovely dad he must have been. Mind you he would have been a nice beau!
sorry new to the site and just saw all the wonderful posts re John, including references to the aforementioned website. i think my soft spot also includes he was the same age as my dear dad and they both passed the same year. it's fascinating looking at the website reading his letters home during his war service at sea. this was an insightful man, with a great joy of life. I would love to have read his autobiography if we had been fortunate enough!
john gregson was one of thee best...british acting at its best ...one of my faves titfield thunderbolt ..![]()
John Gregson is one of my fav actors of all time. But what about Basil Rathbone? I notice that he is not represented here on the website. He has a great website which is very active at the moment. If anyone can give me info regarding this wonderful actor, I would be very grateful. Julia Lambson![]()

John Gregson was also one of my favourite actors. Coincidentally, Channel 4 broadcast one of his earlier, star-making roles in Angels One Five today. I remember him most fondly in Genevieve and The Titfield Thunderbolt and also in Conflict of Wings with Muriel Pavlow. His acting style seemed so effortless, and was a joy to watch.John Gregson is one of my fav actors of all time. But what about Basil Rathbone? I notice that he is not represented here on the website. Good luck Julia in your search for information on Basil Rathbone.

I did Direct 2 Episodes of Gideons Way in 1965. John was not only a great actor but also a lovely fellow.
I, and many others will miss him. John Llewellyn
I think quite a few of us on here have the DVD boxset.I did Direct 2 Episodes of Gideons Way in 1965.![]()
There's a scene in one of your episodes with Alfie Bass carrying a bomb on the top deck of a London bus which was a little chilling given recent events.
He was getting money for old rope in the episode I watched recently on an ITC video...... He did an opening and closing scene with pipe and slippers and some other poor bloke did all the running around.......I did Direct 2 Episodes of Gideons Way in 1965. John was not only a great actor but also a lovely fellow.

I always especially remember Mr. Gregson for that movie he did when he was a binman by day and then became a Hurling Champion...... but that's just my particular memory.....

every year I go to Somerset for a week. I always go and have a drink at the pub where JG was staying when he died. He was indeed a great actor and sounded like a nice man, sad early loss.
Has anyone any thoughts about Johns greatest roles. I suppose Geneivieve comes near the top, with of course the great Gideon series. I never saw him give a bad performance.
I like him in the films Faces In The Dark, Jacqueline, Rooney (Moor's binman film) and Sea of Sand.
On TV he gave a very good performance in Man In A Suitcase (Burden of Proof).
Bats.
Many thanks for the this Rennie.
