"The Wednesday Play" - Cathy Come Home (1963)

Great perfomances from Ray Brooks and especially Carol White

This tells the bleak tale of Cathy, who loses her home, husband and eventually her child through the inflexibility of the British welfare system. A grim picture is painted of mid-sixties London, realistic, but the viewer cannot but realise that a political point is being made. One of the consequences of this film was the formation of the housing charity 'Shelter'.

Given that there are still a lot of homeless people in the UK, even in these prosporous times, this should be essential viewing. It's not exactly comfortable viewing but it's TV drama at its best.

I watched the programme last night about homeless families which brought back memories for me. In the early 80's we were homeless with a child and the story told last night was just the same as our was in 1983. Nothing has changed or improved for the homeless. When I phoned shelter in 1983 they said they could do nothing for us. The council put us in B&B for 6 month, but I see labour changed this to 6 weeks max now. In fact, things have got worse for our homeless here and our hearts go out to them. We moved county in 1984 and found a home with our baby. Today we own our house and are happy, but that experience is never far from our thoughts or those who are going through it at present right now.
