Does anyone know if the 1988 TV play "The Black And Blue Lamp", a (kind of) sequel to The Blue Lamp is available anywhere?

Was there where they took the suspect back to the police station and beat him until he was black and blue?

"George Dixon's dead. No more Mr nice guy"

Almost exactly. It takes the Dixon killer played by Bogarde in the film into a Life On Mars type transmogrification into an episode of a gritty 70s cop show called (IIRC) The Filth where he is indeed beaten and intimidated.

The idea was to juxtapose the perception and reality of policing and the screen portrayal of policing in the 50s and the 70s/80s. Controversial stuff.

I remember it as superb drama - I would love to see it again too.

It seems to come up a lot on 'most wanted' lists. I mainly remember the Bogarde character being very aggrieved because John Woodvine hadn't given him tea and doughnuts!
