I remember Georgina Cookson - she played a wonderful Number 2 in the PRISONER episode 'Many Happy Returns'. She even got to drive Number 6's car ! I've always liked her. She's a 'type', as in usually cast as upper class, but distinctive at the same time.

She does a great character role in one of my fave 'fluff and nonsense' films, YOUR MONEY OR YOUR WIFE, starring Donald Sinden and Peggy Cummins. I think I have some (very old) biographical information on here somewhere. If I find it I will post further ; but I suspect it's not much more than a career resume. I too have had difficulty finding out about her later life. Of course it could be possible that she is still going strong somewhere...

Yes very true I also believe she was in the Prisoner episode A,B&C were she was a Lady at the party in one of number six's dream sequences.

I watched her a few months ago when I saw a few 'Comedy Playhouse' episodes from 1963, she was in an episode called 'impasse' As well as all that since ITV Four have been rerunning classic 1960's and early 1970's ITC programs I was able to see her in the UFO episode 'Court Martial' were she is the one buying industrial secrets.

Like so many I have seen no reports of her not been with us still, sadly once you leave the 'Limelight' you can pass on with no one been told!

I saw her in the U.F.O. episode 'Court Martial' recently, she looked very futuristic with her peircing eyes and green outfit on, Sylvia Anderson designed the clothing.

The only information I've managed to dig out is from an old book I have on British films and actors/actresses.

It says she was born in Mevagissey, Cornwall in 1918. She was Benenden-educated and RADA-trained and her first film was entitled "Millions Like Us", made in 1943. She also played Stewart Granger's jilted bride in the opening scene of a film called "Woman Hater" (1948) and as Terry-Thomas's wife in "The Naked Truth" (1957). She was on stage from 1939 and on television, including the "Kipling" series in 1964.

The book also mentions other British films including, "I Didn't Do It" (1945), "Your Money Or Your Wife" (1960), "Five Golden Hours" (1961), "Woman Of Straw" (1964) and "Darling" (1965).

She is also in the film 'The Shakedown' as the head of Terence Morgan's 'model school', whose pupils include Leila Williams and Jackie Collins.

Successfully bumped, with the help of others. Thanks very much. I didn't know she played Stewart Granger's wife in that film, which is part of a DVD collection of his films, and am surprised I can't remember her in The Naked Truth, which I have seen ... years ago.

I still know Georgina best from two appearances in The Prisoner. She had a major part to play in her second episode, Many Happy Returns, where she was eventually revealed to be the new Number 2, but still made an impression in a very brief role as a mysterious Blonde Lady in Number 6's dream.

Here, Katherine Kath introduces her to Patrick McGoohan at a "dreamy party" party she's hosting in Paris:

"Watch him for me, will you darling?"

Note the "piercing eyes" Mark referred to! They'd have made me go weak at the knees!

Despite having just one scene, Georgina was given a couple of close-ups:

At one point, she removes an earring, which she hands to him to place on a roulette table - "Number six.

I'm sure it's your lucky number" - and leaves him to watch the action.

Making a discreet exit, leaving Number 6 mystified:

Like Patrick Cargill, Georgina Cookson also played a different character in the series. I've always found it odd

that The Prisoner didn't recognise them and that we weren't supposed to notice.

Next time, I'll have something from Many Happy Returns. I hope the weather will be kinder then as it's very

hot today, making it a struggle to compile this.

I haven't seen the Stewart Granger film and it's been years since I saw The Naked Truth myself. The information I provided was from a book called "The Encyclopedia Of British Film" published by Methuen/BFI. I hope it's OK.

I've just seen it listed at Amazon, currently 16. 24. It looks good value, but I'm only interested in films up to the '70s - too many recent additions. I'm sure I'll find something on the older films either in books or on the Internet. Thanks for telling me anyway.

This is something I remember seeing when I

Googled our subject's name some time ago.

From the National Portrait Gallery's website:

It's by a photographer known simply as

Vivienne, alias Mrs. Florence Entwhistle, who

also lived into her 90s. Don't know if this

picture got as far as being displayed in the

famous gallery but it's an interesting find.

    Sadly undated.

There are an amazing SIXTEEN pages of Vivienne's portraits of stars from the past. For some unknown reason the link won't work, not even to the site's home page, which is npg.org.uk, or why not Google 'National Portrait Gallery'? You'll see she photographed people as varied as David Niven and Dusty Springfield.

I am Georgina Cookson's daughter and am happy to report she is now 91 and living in Sydney, Australia. She plays bridge six times a week, backgammon once a week, bingo once a week and makes bus trips to the local shopping center and library! Her mind is still sharp as a tack and she still amuses us all with her entertaining stories! It was a great life she led. She spent 20 years happily married on the island of Ibiza through the 70's into the 80's when it was in its heyday. It's great to read all of your posts.

Great to read the post about your mother, Sarah, and to learn that she is well and so active! I can recall her in so many roles in the flics from my childhood. I think she cornered the market in rather intimidating, regal ladies! For some reason, I always associate her with giving Tony Hancock a hard time in a high class clothes shop in The Punch and Judy Man but when I look in IMDB there is no reference to her being in the film.

I'm sure that was your mother, wasn't it??

Please send her our best wishes from this thread!

Sarahbutler - When one expects the worst so often from threads like this, that is so lovely to hear! and may there be Many more Happy Returns, if she'll forgive the pun.

    Sarah -

As you might guess from my earlier post in this thread I am so very pleased to hear the good news that your mother is still going strong and is happy and content 'Down Under'. If I had to sum her character roles up in a couple of words I'd have to say, "Effortless elegance".

Do please pass on my good wishes and be sure to let her know that her work continues to give great pleasure to so many of us Britmovie fans to this day.

    Regards,

Sarah why did she leave the screen?

as an intriguing, deep, regal looking lady she must have been in demand?, her casting in a show such as the Prisoner was so absolutely spot on.

Can she remember the part she played in 'Sanctuary' ?
