This sounds to me like the series that was called 'Supernatural' that was shown in 1977 by the BBC.
Does anyone remember a british TV horror series from the seventies called "Club of the Damned" ? each week a prospective member had to tell an assembled commitee of established members a story that would justify them being accepted into the club, cue flashbacks and various horror/supernatural tales. It was a bit like a TV version of the Amicus horror compendiums, I remember it being quite good, are there any recordings around I wonder?

Wasn't it an American series with people like Fred Astaire, etc and they all sat around in high-backed leather chairs around a roaring fire...

This sounds like the film 'Ghost Story' based on a Peter Straub horror story.
the main focus is he remembers a series that was shown by the BBC in or around 1977 that featured the 'Club of the Damned' with a prospective member that had to tell an assembled commitee of established members a story that would justify them being accepted into the club.
In short this would be the series called 'Supernatural'
I'm sure club of the damned was a BBC production shown on BBC 1 on a Saturday night before match of the day - could stay up no school next day. Didn't the story tellers pay with their lives if they failed to impress the members of the club.
