Not THE HISTORY OF Mr. POLLY, is it...?
Smudge
There is an old chap telling a story (not Olivier or Richardson, but not sure) and at the end (there are flashbacks) he is sitting in a greenhouse/conservatory type of place. I have been thinking about this film for ages and cannot for the life of me remember who was in it or what it was about. Not much to go on but it might spark a memory.

smudge, finally watched mr. polly last night, great film, but not the one I was thinking about.
Could it be Noel Coward's This Happy Breed with Robert Newton & Celia Johnson?
Starry x.
Is it definitely British?
Puts me in mind of Citizen Kane (1941).
I'm going for This Happy Breed too.
Does this picture from This Happy Breed ring any bells?
Bats.
How about Went the Day Well?
Mervyn John relating the story of an abortive invasion attempt during WWII.
Could it be THE MAN WHO LOVED REDHEADS?

How about "The Truth About Women" with a white-haired Laurence Harvey reflecting on his younger days?

Truth About Women: I have a copy of this. I'll see if later on I can nab a screenshot and post it for viewing.

Hi John, could you get a grab???
I'd go with Dave Rattigan on this one. Sounds a lot like Citizen Kane. The story is mainly told in flashback and it does have scenes with an elderly Joseph Cotton sitting in a conservatory type building.
