Hi there, I watched a film on Tv a couple of years ago. It was about a poor homeless boy who loved art. He became friends with an artist who sort of looked after him, he had a very tuff life on the streets this artist was like a father figure to him. There is a scene where the boy is cast out in the snow accused of stealing a wallet of money from this family. He nearly dies and he ends up in a church. The boy takes the wallet back to the family again. Can anyone remember this film and do you have a title for it please, hope you can help, thanks

Could it be Basquiat (1996), a film that traces the life of American artist Jean Michel Basquiet?

From being destitute and living in a cardboard box in New York the story follows his belated rise to success as a painter. He died in 1988, still aged in his twenties.

The 1959 (released 1960) 20th Century-Fox CinemaScope / colour version of A Dog of Flanders starring the then 12 years old David Ladd as Nello and Donald Crisp as his infirm grandfather has an identical storyline except for the stealing of the wallet. However, this version, by far the best of many versions of the classic novel, hasn't been shown on television in the UK since it was shown on BBC 1 at Christmas, 1973...almost thirty-six years ago. Below, a publicity still from the David Ladd version, which was filmed entirely on location in Belgium and Holland.

The David Ladd version of A Dog of Flanders (above) is being released on Region 2 DVD for the first time in full 2.35:1 CinemaScope on January 25th, 2010 and is now available for pre-order at amazon.co.uk. I saw the news posted on the IMDb and checked with Zeta Minor forthcoming releases and found it was true. It will also have the "20th Century-Fox presents a CinemaScope picture" logo on the beginning, that has been missing from all previous VHS and DVD pan and scan releases. I have pre-ordered my copy and am looking forward to seeing it in widescreen for the first time since I first went to see it as a 14 year old in 1961. One footnote: Although the film was recorded in four track magnetic stereo sound, the new DVD will only have mono sound.

UPDATE: Although the Region 2 release of the widescreen DVD won't be released until January 25th, 2010, it has already been released on Region 1 in July. So if you have a multi-region DVD player and don't want to wait for it until the end of January next year, you can order it from amazon.com. Quite a reasonable price, too, at only 8 in our currency. However, make sure you order the new 2.35:1 version and not the old pan and scan version, which is still available. Apparently, according to one amazon.com customer, the new CinemaScope transfer is superb and knocks the old pan and scan version out of the water.
