I saw this on TV in London in the 80's. The story is set at Oxford and is about a school/college for students of Englsh as a second language. Edward Fox plays a guileless good man who is used in various ways by the other teachers. He becomes the unwilling confidant of one of the other teachers. This teacher lives with her mother whom she hates and wishes dead. When the mother dies after falling down the stairs, there is ambiguilty about the cause of the fall.

It is a funny film with lovely dark undertones. Probably a TV special - not glossy enough for the big screen.

Any idea of how Icould track it down?

    Many thanks, Marion

Sounds like Quartermaine's Terms which also featured John Gielgud.
