I suspect that this is from a story by Graham Greene (one of his last writings). The narrator (grown up) finds the broken pot. I can't recall the title. Sorry!
I vaguely remember watching a TV drama in the 1970s in which a young man returns to his childhood home and wonders if he's imagined a strange old couple nearby who seem to live underground in some kind of warren or hut. The old man, I'm sure, was played by Arthur Lowe.
I remember Lowe telling the youth to "piss, boy, piss" and handing him some pot when he needed to visit the loo. Funny how these details stay in your mind. I recall the atmosphere of the piece was quite odd, almost Lewis Carroll-like. It didn't seem to be clear whether the old couple really existed or whether this had been imagined.
If I'm right about Arthur Lowe, then the only title I've seen that might be this is Daphne Laureola (1978).
Can anyone shed any light on this?

If it is by Graham Greene, then it's a short story called "Under the Garden".

Many thanks. "Under The Garden" was produced as part of a series of adaptations called Shades of Greene in 1976. This must definitely be the one. However, I can't place Arthur Lowe in this series so I suspect memory has caught me out there. Could be another older (eccentric) character actor.
