First one sounds like it could possibly have been an episode of Doomwatch - or even the movie. The actor doesn't ring any obvious bells though.
I have a distant memory of two UK TV series, that I've struggled to identify, so I hope you might be able to help me out and identify these. I have very little information, besides some tiny clues. Here goes.
First of all a series I suspect is late sixties/early seventies. We didn't have a colour TV until about 1974/5 so I only remember it as B&W. I think it might have been shown on a sunday afternoon/early evening and think it was repeated weekly.
My faint memory is of a small remote town/village at the seashore. I think there was some foreboding mystery taking place around the village, but I can't remember what. I think the principle cast were quite young and I remember in particular an actor I've seen many times from that era onwards, but don't know his name - he's never had big success or to my knowledge had a big starring role or carried his own series. My impression of him is that he's not particularly tall but has always had a very high forehead/receding hairling and had sandy/blonde hair. The thing I also remember about this series are sand dunes/reeds and the sound of a curlew. I'm sure there was some kind of secret involved, but no idea what.
Not much to go on, I know.
Secondly, an even more tenuous description. I think it was a tea-time series in the 1960's. I remember mysterious music and people being taken away by aliens yet only the children know something was wrong. I remember shots of jodrell bank and also flying saucers that would land and stand on three legs. The legs were flat plates that had circles cut in them. I believe entry into the spacecraft was via a ladder attached to a leg.
Born in the late 50's there sci-fi memory is very early for me. I can say with certainty thet these spaceships have nothing to do with 'lost in space', the US show 'the invaders' or the later 'tripods'.
Maybe I just imagined these shows and they never existed?
Thanks for any suggestions. I've only just discovered this site - it's a very interesting place. Wow!

No, definitely not Doomwatch. I remember it was very slow paced and not just a single episode, or anything to do with scientific disasters. just 'ordinary' people.
If I could only find the actor I'm thinking of it would solve it, I'm sure. I need a rogues gallery of 1960s/1970s youngish male actors!
Can anyone identify this programme?
Number 1 might be The Hill of the Red Fox (shown on BBC1 in 1975).

Hi,
I think it is TRIPODS.

It does sound like Tripods though that was made in the mid eighties.

The first one sounds a bit like Granada's The Intruder to me.
That was set in a small seaside town. The main stars were James Bate, Milton Johns and Jack Woolgar.
Bate played Arnold Haithwaite and Woolgar his father Ernest. Milton Johns arrives in the town, seemingly tries to drown Bate and claims that he is the real Arnold Haithwaite.
Based on a book by John Rowe Townsend, the first episode is available on Network DVD's "Look-Back on 70s Telly - Issue 3".
Hi,
I am not familiar with the above programme. So I will take your word. The only other story I can think of with tripod aliens outside of TRIPODS is that of WAR OF THE WORLDS. But I do not think that has been done as a telsvision play or serial, unlike H.G. Wells' other vintage sci-fi classi THE TIME MACHINE. I believe that the BBC may have done a radio version of WAR OF THE WORLDS in addition to broadcasting the American 1930's version. But the tripod aliens would not have been seen by the audience.
