A few years back,I think BBC had a programme on the telly. It was about a writer, who entered into the police academy, became a copper and exposed the racial hatred of minorities in that city, was this programme ever released on dvd?

I could be wrong here (I frequently am), but wasn't that program about the London Met' police? Come to think of it, I'm sure this particular academy had trainees from several forces (?). Can't have been London then. Perhaps I'm confusing this with another, similar, documentary? Oh, heck, I haven't a clue what I'm talking about so just ignore me

Anyway, I haven't come across it on DVD, and I don't think it's ever been repeated on TV.

All in all then, this reply has been a total waste of time. You'll have to take my word for this, but I'm beating myself up severely even as we speak for squandering precious forum space and resources.

    Good luck in finding it!

It's always a tough one to distinguish forms of 'gallows humour' from actual behaviour. Biffer is certainly correct that this was a very recent documentary. There have been quite a few of this sort of thing, yet nothing much ever seems to come of them. There was another one fairly recently where a couple of reporters 'penetrated' a High Street British bank and 'proved' that there was a systematic process of selling customers insurance they didn't need and even moving customers bank accounts without their permission to one paying the sales-person commission. They also secretly recorded bank employees/training personnel belittling and stereotyping their customers.

I'm always amazed that journalistic evidence like this never seems to appear in court-cases. Or at least it's never publicised. I guess the courts won't accept 'entrapment' scenarios. Maybe that's a good thing.

    Hi Ron

I haven't got the programme you are after but i have got on video recorded from Channel 4 Dispatches Undercover Police.

This is a four-month undercover investigation by Nina Hobson,in which she reveals officers dismissing rape cases, watching pornography and ignoring calls.

That documentary caused a major stir - it was called "Undercover Policeman" or maybe "The Laughing Policeman". I think it was recorded in Manchester.

In one sequence it showed a police recruit dressed up like a member of the Ku Klux Klan and waving a knife around.

I remember one senior officer in the Manchester police saying that he felt physically sick when he viewed the programme. The Home Secretary also felt obliged to congratulate the BBC on making it, so I imagine this is one those programmes that the Beeb will be crowing about for years to come.
