    hi to all

when i was a kid in 70s, i saw kind of historical TV drama/series on french TV : it was apparently british, B&W, and mainly about historical events or period:

    - about elisabeth (the one who fight the scottish ... i'm french :) and the plot around her to have her down

    - the story about the regicide (well he tried) Damiens who tempted to murder Louis the XIV

i remember it was in B&W but the look of the people clearly let think it was quite recent : so in the 70s

Another main hint : it was quite crude, torture scenes, often half nacked people... meant to be as in the true medieval period or history way.

    If anyone can tell me!

    Elizabeth R is in colour.

Also, she didn't fight the Scots, merely executed the ex-queen we'd kicked out.

    What date?

Looks to me as if it could be one of the versions of Les Rois Maudits.

It seems an impertinence to put you right on your own country's history, but Damien's intended victim was Louis XV, not XIV.

I think you must indeed mean Elizabeth R. In one episode, Francis Babbington (played by David Collings) has been captured after his failed attempt to assassinate Elizabeth and place Mary on the English throne. There's a scene in the torture chamber of the Tower of London in which the Executioner (Brian Wilde) tells him in great detail what's going to happen to him. We don't in fact see it happen, but the vivid description might well have given a child nightmares.

Topless certainly (though not as topless as he was going to be ) but as I remember he was standing up, screwed into a nasty coffin-shaped vice-like apparatus with his hands chained above his head.

Yes, but it's Anthony or Antony Babington.

No, Les Rois Maudits was a French 1970s series, but it was shown in the UK.

I'm afraid the picture you are using is too small for me to see clearly what style of armour the guards are wearing. That would help me date the setting.

Incidentally, I see you have Braveheart listed as your favourite British film. It's a Hollywood film, despite a strong British cast in supporting roles, and I must say that, as a medival historian and a Scot, I found it historically dubious in the extreme.
