Sounds like a proptotype of The Truman Show...
Sorry if I've asked this before but, if I have, it was quite a while ago.
This was a one off drama on ITV or C4 from the late 80's or early 90's.
The full piece was shot through fisheye lenses of hidden cameras of a new housing estate. The entire estate was watched constantly, and any problems that the households were having were depicted on their own in-estate soap show. The programme also pointed people towards solutions to their problems.
This was all without the knowledge of the residents, you understand.
All fine and dandy until one resident clicks on to what's happening, tries to blow the whistle and then sees his own character being killed off.
There, that's all that I can remember.
Any help would be appreciated as I'm beginning to think that I dreamt the whole thing!

It was similar, although they were all on the show and were being manipulated unknowingly.
The story rings a vague bell as a science fiction story I once read. SF doesn't have to be about space ships and laser guns
I can't remember any more details but it might help if you check SF sites for that sort of story

This has a similar plot but is earlier than the dates you give.

It could have been a repeat when lostintown saw it. That's often fooled people before when they remember when they saw it but weren't aware when it was made. It's like when people think something was in B&W because that's how they remember it. But it turns out it was in colour but they saw it on a B&W TV
The IMDb gives a date of 26 May 1981 for the first broadcast of ITV Playhouse: Sin with Our Permission.

THANKS! That's certainly the closest to any synopses (and by God I've looked at a few) to what I remember!
Many thanks again, folks. You seldom let me down :)
I actually saw Sin with Our Permission at the NFT about 10 years ago and it does match your description, lostintown. My memory is that Paul Eddington was the evil mastermind. Mind you, I also remember it being in b/w so what do I know?
Black and white...early 90's....
You may join me in the home for "People who have a good idea of what they remember but get the details all wrong".
It's opening in Scotland, so it's free!
