Always understood that 'Film' denoted art house and 'Movie' denoted mainstream. It is a crude form of demarcation and like all forms of pigeon-holing doesn't tell the full story.

It is America's fault (of course it is!) In my youth the American - deep voiced - Trailer announcer always called it 'a motion picture' and that wonderful Jack Hawkins - in Home for Seven - said 'the pictures'.

So, perhaps the correct term is motion picture and a film is what we might put into a still camera?

But to me it is still the film industry.
