I collect British made WW2 films made or released between 1939 and 1969. The films I am interested in are not only the conventional action films but those that are peripherably involved with WW2, like This Happy Breed. Films that show something of the conditions on the home front and the emotions of the people that are seeing friends and relatives going to war.

I am finding it quite difficult to compile a definitive list of these films, as soon as I think I'm there some more films come along. Does anyone know where I can go for information, or can anyone let me have a list of these films. Alternatively, I can email them of a list of the films that I think cover this category and perhaps they can tell me what I have missing./B]

Check all the Powell & Pressburger films made during the war. One of the many unusual things about their war films is that they hardly ever really mention the war. They're more interested in the people than all the actual shooting

Probably wouldn't take long to compile a comprehensive list from the contents of this existing thread http://filmdope.com/forums/br...wwii-film.html

Many thanks for that information. I do have a list of P and P films but unfortunately some, such as Squadron Leader X, seem to be lost and untraceable.

Thanks for the information and the link. This has provided me with some useful additions but the titles listed are missing an awful lot of films, I have some 75+ films that are not shown.

Why not post your list? I'm sure we'd all be interested.

I have to ask: why do you curtail your interest at 1969? I mean there have been one or two fantastic WWII films made after that date - not least A Bridge Too Far.

Is it arbitary or is there something significant about '69?

I've seen a few past that date that were worth watching - I enjoyed Yanks (probably because I'm a girly) - but my favourite WW2 film is actually German..(am I allowed to say that here) 'Das Boot' made in 1981 I think. Everyone should watch it - thoughtful, compelling direction and a genuinely surprising take on the war from the German point of view (not Nazi - the ordinary Germans..)

I found it fascinating and I think girlies are not supposed to...

Cos girls are meant to like films where people cry a lot and meet handsome men - or so Hollywood would have us believe..

And you want to be a Hollywood scriptwriter and write films like that?

Or are you planning to subvert the system from the inside?

Yes, well this is the idea..I was actually empolyed for about as a scriptwriter for a regional tv company. Afterwards the Drama dept closed down and the TV programme I was about to write for..I think I might have accidentally subverted the system for

    the inside there too..

That was a few years ago, but I'm thinking of having another crack..long way to Hollywood though and a lot of nepotism to get past.

I had a go at producing a list of UK WW2 related films fom many sources and ended up also fathering a list of non-UK WW2 films including lots of Eastern European titles which looked really interesting. A couple of forum members have added titles I'd missed. Both lists are very much works in progress, but if anyone is interested I can send them the lists by email as Excel workbooks. Each list has dates, director, leading actor and a very brief comment or synopsis.

I'd be happy to post the UK list here if no-one objects, but it's very long.

Actually now I look at it, the UK list is only 200 films, including some modern ones.

    Cheers,

    Richard

As the list pruned of non-UK isn't as long as I thought, I'll chance posting it. As I said - a work very much in progress and one which probably includes some non-WW2 and errors. I have included a few co-productions and I may not have cut all the non-UK. Feel free to add, subtract and comment.

No! I will pursue my dream until the point where it becomes obvious that I have wasted most of my life doing it - like most other people.

What a useful list that is, but like all lists one can always think of something to add. One film which I particularly like - maybe because I'm a fan of the novels of Nevil Shute - is Landfall (1949). Michael Denison is the star and not at all a bad war film it is too.

I didn't mean for you not to pursue your dream ..... what I meant was get yourself a stable financial base as well. You could regard the sarnies as a bit of a filler between scripts.

Not according to your IMDB summary.

"This is the tale of life in a British port in the first year of World War II. Spies and smugglers abound in the blackout and unreal shore life of the "phoney war" (before the shooting started). Written by Steve Crook."
