I remember watching a fours-part British drama on TV produced in the end of the 80's/beginning of the 90's but I can't remember its name. The action takes place in the 19th century. The main story is about a poor girl who is abondened by her mother and she ends up living with a magistrate and his family (wife and 2 sons). Later, she is seduced by the elder son and they have an affair. However, she ends up being married to the younger one.

In Episode 2 she leaves her husband (I don't remember the exact reasons, I believe there was some sort of crime she comitted) and she meets a young American, a captain of a commercial ship, and she goes to the US with him where they marry and have a daughter. However, when talking to her mother-in-law she realises that her mother-in-law is in fact her own mother who went to the US after abondoning her and thus, she happened to be married to her half-brother. She tries to deal with it somehow but she can't and she goes back to Britain where, as far as I recall, she is arrested and executed. While she is waiting for the execution, the elder son of the magistrate whom she has had an affair with, visits her in the prison.

That is all I remember! I hope someone would be able to help me, I've been trying to find this particular drama for a while but without success! Thank you!

Yes, she was very good..and the way it was shot, executed..excellent - I still remember an aside to the camera as she explains why she is behaving as she is..out of nowhere and quite casually done and all the more powerful for it.
