My personal favourite were the ones from the EMI group in the sixties, the green Columbia label the red Parlophone, the blue HMV and best of all the distinctive yellow MGM.

Also loved Capitol , Phillips. Fontanta, Top Rank. Coral, R.C.A. Victor, Pye Nixa.

Not just the labels of course the music therein was pretty good too.

Its great to see retrospective cd's that show old record labels in the booklet, there was a great ilustration of this in a recent Joe Loss compilation from EMI Gold.

I got really annoyed when the Sancturay Recording Group folded, they handled all the old Pye catalogue which they released on their Sequel label, since Universal took over they have deleted many well annotated compilations in favour of tv advertised compilations.

As far as I am aware its impossible to obtain original albums by The Searchers and Petula Clark and other artists from the Pye stable.

I quite liked Probe. (Not just because it was Steely Dan's original label)

The Harvest label another winner from E.M.I. home to Pink Floyd, Barclay James Harvest and Wizard. Fond memories of buying,"See My Baby Jive," by the lattermentioned.

Also agree with Batmans choice of Polydor, Track and Rak. Rak brings back memories of cheesey seventies material from the Chinn and Chapman stable.

How about the long gone, Anchor label. Now I might be wrong here but I think Frankie Vali was on this label when he did My Eyes Adored You and David Soul might have been a stablemate.

Reprise a magic label for me when I rifled through record collections of friends and relatives, there was always some Sinatra or Dean Martin.

I know the Capitol years are generally considered to be Sinatras best period but I have soft spot for the Reprise years. He was in reasonably good voice up until the late sixties and his recording projects during those years were well thought out releases. On the down side Reprise give us Sinatra at his cheesiet, with Strangers In The Night and Something Stupid with Nancy, but they certainly have their merits.

Dean Martin got increasingly cheesier when he was at Reprise but again who couldnt resist the charm of the material he did during that period.

The only official commercial recordings of the rat pack are on Reprise, soundtrack material and the songs from the shows that they cut under the name of The Rerprise Repertory Company.

Two of my favourite ever releases on The Reprise label were Keelly Smiths 1964 album of Lennon and Mcartney songs and Gordon Lightfoots classic, album""Sit Down Young Stranger," which was later renamed,"If You Could Read My Mind," when that song became a monster hit and also a much coverered song. One of my all time favoiurites.
