Are you sure it's a gas works and not a power station?![]()
Another obscure one from a 1978 episode of 'The Professionals'. I have this down as Mill Hill Gas works on Bittacy Hill just past the railway (Mill Hill East). However, it was all demolished years back, as were the offices across the road in the last but one shot. Can anyone with local knowledge confirm or deny this one? A reflection of a chimney can be seen in the police car, looks like it says 600 (image rotated for clarity)?

Ah! Could well be a power station,![]()

In that case, have a look around Coronation Road/Park Royal Road, NW10 (Park Royal). It was seeing the chimney which got me thinking. The 600 group, AKA George Cohen had a huge chimney down there which I remember from my school days. There was also a generating station on Coronation Road
Also, the area around Bittacy Hill/Mill Hill East station wasn't very built up at that time.
Are you working from modern maps?
Hope this helps?![]()
If it helps, there were two power station buildings, the first being at the junction of Everitt Road and Cunard Road NW10 and the other directly north on the north side of the canal between North Acton Road and the railway line. The cooling tower was directly between the 2 on the south side of the canal.

I can't see a power station at that location on my Bartholomews 1961, but I definitely remember a 600.........George Cohen in those days...........presence near North Acton station![]()
It was there in 1989 according to the map I was referring to but not in the 2004 version so must've been demolished around then. 600 were also at Wood Lane W12 but sold the site to the BBC.
Cheers guys; I'm checking the '600' possibilities but haven't come up trumps with anything yet, except the group got its name as they were originally set up at 600 Commercial Road, E14
They had a factory in the 70's / 80's at Sunbeam Road, NW10, quite rightly near North Acton station, but this isn't the 'missing' road either by the looks of things.
I'm not sure what the Wood Lane site looked like - surely this can't be the BBC tv Centre as it is today, and it can't be further up as that was the old White City stadium.
Mariocki; do you know exactly where on Wood Lane they were?
I think the land in question was opposite the BBC TV Centre on the east side of Wood Lane............between Wood lane and Latimer Road![]()

More than likely Chevyman!........ the Hammersmith & City tube line will be on the Viaduct in the first pic, a new Station is due to open on Wood Lane shortly.....

That bridge in the third photo, with the Police Rover, is definitely a London Transport Bridge..........I'd wager
The location isn't far from "SteptoeLand"![]()
After much checking and double-checking, thanks to you guys, I would say this is definitely Wood Lane itself, with the buildings (offices) actually part of the BBC (which have had a make-over since).![]()

Might well be Chevyman!, thing is a Travelcard only allows me as far as Moor Park, but I guess I could get another ticket for further on, thanks for the link, lot's of interesting pics I've not seen before!![]()
The building is on the East side of Wood Lane, it is directley opposite the Westbound Central line platform at White City station.
The bridge was supposed to be temporary when it was installed for the construction of the new White City station, but has stayed and is now essential for the construction of the new shopping centre at Wood Lane.
I was involved in the construction of a new loading bay and rail connection from the Western region for the 600 group at North Acton.
It was only in use for 1 year from 1979 -80 and was then sold to Pioneer cement.
Think I've got it: it is Wood Lane, and the '600' group had a HQ here - opposite BBC tv Centre - which are the buildings we see on the road - I think.
My concern now is the gas-works, and I'm beginning to think Southall isn't right - I've checked 'Dr. Who', 'The New Avengers', 'Return of The Saint' and 'Blakes 7' which used Southall from 1965 - 1979 and I can't match up any of the buildings below: Note the block of flats in the background on the first image - which has to be the biggest clue as to where these works once were.

A film called Shooting Fish (1997) had scenes filmed at Mill Hill Gas Works - would anyone have this film and check for me please?
