Can anyone remember this film, a U boat torpedoes a merchant ship but it doesn't sink. The U boat surfaces to finish it of by gunfire but the ship is armed and a duel ensues between them and I'm not sure of the outcome, maybe the Uboat is sunk .Anyone any clues ?

Possibly it is The Enemy Below.

Could be Q ships. I think Ralph Richardson was in it. I haven't checked IMDB but it's worth a look.

IIRC the 'Gift Horse' was a destroyer.

I think I know the one you mean. Doesn't the captain order for some oil to be spilled along one side of the deck and for it to be set alight to make the U-boat captain get fooled into thinking the ship is done for?

Sounds like the end of the Brando/Brynner film Morituri.

Gift Horse is a thinly disguised story of the St Nazaire raid where HMS Campbeltown was smashed into the dry dock gates to deny the Germans the use of the facilities for repairing pocket battleships such as Scharnhorst or Gneisenau.

The ship in Gift Horse certainly sinks a U-boot, and in doing so regains her honour after a series of disasters.

    But I don't think it's the film you're remembering.

Would it have been The Key starring Trevor Howard and Sophia Loren?

This happens in "DESTINATION TOKYO" 1943. Cary Grant is the captain and the cargo boat is a Jap decoy that surrenders to Grants sub then opens fire on them.
