I recall watching an excellent film in Disney's True Life Adventures series which, I think, was based in Africa.

It featured a memorable sequence where quite a few animals (monkeys, in patrticular) were eating fruit that had dropped from the trees and had started to ferment. Gradually, they became quite tipsy and displayed some hilarious behaviour. The next morning the animals appeared to have colosal hangovers! All this, of course, was hammed up somewhat by the Disney treatment, but, it was good entertainment.

Can anyone recall the name of the film?

    Thanks!

I've personally witnessed this phenomenon. The fruits that the animals are eating are from either the Marula tree or the Mopani tree - both fruits produce an identical effect. The fruits are similar, about the size of loquats and are immensely high in sugar content.

The overripe fruits fall to the ground where they lay for a day or two and garner wild yeasts and begin to ferment in the hot daytime temperatures. By the time the animals eat (great quantities) of the fruits, there is already a small alcohol content which continues to augment for a short while inside the digestive tracts (especially in the case of elephants).

The spectacle was known for many years before Jamie Uys filmed it.

I remember this one too, though I don't remember the main feature that it preceded - I was still laughing at Beautiful People - definitely worth watching.
