Sounds a bit like Children of the Stones.
I remember being shown this in primary school and being scared silly when I was younger.
The only things I can distinctly remember about it are these:
Two of the main characters are a young boy and a girl (possibly brother and sister)
The girl is visited by the ghost of an old lady during the night at the end of her bed
It ended with some sort of ancient ritual ceronomy that was depicted in a painting that hung on the wall where they were staying.
The painting showed someone turned to stone and I think this is what happened to one of the characters as they escaped the ritual for looking back.
Thats all I can remember. Any ideas what this might be?
Cheers

Although the picture certainly sounds like Children of the Stones.
The rest vaguely conjures up memories of an episode of a series along the lines of "Worlds Beyond"
entitled "Stones" (or something along that line)>
Most of your memories are from "Children of the Stones" (which scared the crap out of me as well), but the old lady ghost seems to be from something else.
It could be the episode Stones from the 1976 series The Mind Beyond.

The old lady ghost at the foor of the bed sounds like The Woman in Black.
I agree that many of the plot points sound like Children of the Stones which I'm going to track don, however I have a very strong memory of the femail ghost which has been abscent from all plot description ive read of Children of the Stones. It was a long time ago so maybe Im getting my memories confused! It definatly wasnt Woman in Black as the ghost I'm thinking of was a friendly old lady.
Will check Children of the Stones and the Stones episode to see if thats where its all coming from.
