    I think it's William Mervyn

I don't know why, but he appeared in Carve Her Name With Pride as an M like character, but he appeared to be dubbed by Geoffrey Keen. Maybe someone else can confirm it. He did use his own voice in a small role in Dunkirk

He was the tv show All Gas And Gaitors and played the old gentleman in the film version of The Railway Children

He also regulary played a Judge in Crown Court

The "M like character" was Colonel Buckmaster, the head of F Section, S.O.E. the man responsible for all the agents sent to France (the busiest section) during the war.

You can see the real Colonel Buckmaster giving an introduction to Odette (1950)

I often used to see William Mervyn on my commuter train in the mornings in the 70s; he used to wear a 'Sherlock Holmes' coat.

Agreed, it's William Mervyn. Wasn't he in 'All Gas & Gaiters' on TV?
