Youths taunted suicidal, gay teenager, Shaun Dykes, as he sat on the edge of a

multi-storey car park, in Derby, urging him to jump.

The 17-year-old was reported to be depressed after the breakdown of a relationship.

According to bystanders, there was a shout of "How far can you bounce?"

After Shaun fell, youths rushed forward trying to take photos of his body.

Police negotiators had spent three hours trying to talk him out of killing himself.

The pavement, underneath Shaun, had been closed, but not the road - enabling a crowd to gather.

The Independent Police Complaints Commisssion has decided not to investigate.

If true it's one of the saddest things I've heard in ages. From 3,000 miles away it would appear that a completely rudderless society is developing. Hogarth's etchings, the Gin Drink and the Gordon Riots come to mind. Horrid stuff.

I spend a lot of time in Belgium and there's nothing like this goes on as far as I know. And the only drunks you see on the street are the weekend Brits.

    How sad. Poor bloke.

This quote from his head teacher just about sums it up:-

"One student told me he could not believe people place such little value on life. Its almost like they are in a television show......................"

I am aware that internet users and mobile phone footage these days, carries a number of *real-life* blood-letting incidents from Afghanistan and Iraq. Real-life brutality and gory death is entertainment.

On the other hand, if this was *typical Britain*, it wouldn't make the news would it?

Was there really a baying mob? From the article quoted in the first post, it seems to have been one person who shouted out at him. 999. Given that the police were there for three hours, it seems slightly unlikely that there was also a large crowd shouting for him to jump. Are there any other accounts of the incident - and is there a link to that one?

Surely you don't think that the media might be exaggerating to try and make something seem more dramatic/terrible than it really was?

    BBC News

I can't see any reports about youths who "rushed forward trying to take photos of his body" - that's especially unlikely as there were so many police and ambulance crews there

when his own parents expressed upset at his treatment ,you cant say that .were not talking " freddy starr ate my hamster " or tittle tattle about big brother contestants .bad things that happen cant always be shrugged of as the tabloids making things up

I just linked to the first one I could find with that sort of headline; it was The Telegraph.

I find the whole thing quite distasteful, however many/few 'spectators' there were there.

It reminds me a bit of Bob Newhart's "Ledge Psychology" where a burger van sets up in the street.

Perhaps the government should bring in yet ANOTHER fine for people who stop at scenes like this...........

Sounds more like Dirty Harry to me, but without any heroes

Not unfortunately as rare as you'd think. See this link

Reminds me of Amos Gexella, the young black man famously photographed on a buiilding in Johannesburg just before he jumped to his death.

I'm not saying they made it up (in this instance) but that their headlines make it out be worst than it was. There wasn't a "baying mob urging him to jump".

And it's not just the Daily Mail that I dislike, I dislike all newspapers, they're all guilty of mis-reporting and exaggerating events for dramatic effect and to spin things to suit their owners and editors points of view

Many of the crowd probably didn't even realise what was going on - if I saw a large number of people gathered round a building, I'd stop to find out what was happening. I probably wouldn't stick around in this situation but surely it's human nature to be curious? And with so many people there apparently with cameras and recording devices, you'd think there'd be some record of the 'baying mob'. If there was one. It's clearly wrong to shout abuse at a boy in that situation but I don't think one person (or even a few) is evidence of some sort of descent into Hogarthian hell.
