Well, I won't be needing to see that one after you gave the plot away!
In the early days of C4 they showed some good shorts. But BBC did too and I think this was one of theirs.
There's a guy sitting in the kitchen about to shoot himself. As he's pulling the trigger the clock is just short of midnight and a woman appears.
She basically tells him he's making a mistake. He is eventually convinced and decides not to go through with it.
But the clock ticks onto midnight (with us now knowing time stopped for the conversation) and the bullet continues it's flight into his head, with him already having pulled the trigger.
Well, I won't be needing to see that one after you gave the plot away!
Unfortunately the way it ended is rather crucial to people remembering it.
It's also unlikely to make a reappearance so I don't think anyone will get put off seeing it.
Havent seen this but it has strong echoes of the plot being based on a famous short story by Guy de Maupassant - "Another Shot In The Locker".
That's interesting...I can't find that title as a short story by him, though, only by someone else.
I had hoped to find a "now filmed as....." comment.
This sounds like a short I saw set on millennium eve which had a guy about to kill himself while a party was taking place next door. This would explain the clock counting down. If I remember right he changes his mind, but ends up accidentally killing himself anyway. There's a girl at the party played by an actress whose name I can't remember, but I think she played the girl that Harry Enfield's character Kevin lost his virginity to (not in this film, obviously). It's possible that she's the one who stops the man pulling the trigger.
Aha! Her name has come to me, and a quick look at the IMDb shows that the film I'm thinking of is...
Dead on Time (1999)
I don't know if this is what you're looking for...
Sadly that's not the one I'm thinking of, although I do remember it.
'Mine' has just the two people in it. The clock was not so much a countdown as just stopping in time for him to be convinced he was making a mistake and then ticking on to midnight not for a new day, but the end.
It was very effective.
can you remember roughly when it was on tv?
Mid to late 80s, perhaps.

Now that is interesting. It's not the one suggested but I may have found what it was.
Possibly called The End and one of Channel Four's Shooting Gallery shorts.
Apparently written by Kathy Burke who used to star with Harry Enfield's Kevin.
I must admit, I don't recall it being that recent though.
Found it
Another member was looking for something also in Shooting Gallery and someone posted a list with brief plots for each.
Kate Hardie was in it. The clock approached 6.00 not midnight.
Reckoning. 1995.
It's on youtube.
