I still don't know what to make of Paul Merton's foreign jaunts, first in China and now in India.

He's a clever and funny man. But he can't seem to resist the "look at the foreigners, aren't they strange" types of remarks

I didn't see his time in China but quite enjoyed last night's programme ....smoking dope in India mustn't be illegal.....the woman who was his guide caught his sense of humour straightaway.

Whenever i see scenes of India it always looks like a hotchpotch of a country.... i'm amazed anything gets done!

The sect he 'joined' were weird .....imo ...of course.

I saw some of the China series. I agree - it was 'lets look for the oddities - how strange these people are'.

Crikey China is a fascinating country as it is - you don't need to seek out the bizarre!

He doesn't seem to be doing as much of the "look at the funny foreigners" as he did in China. But he's still doing it a bit

Not sure about that I'm afraid. On HIGNFY, when seated next to someone such as Andy Hamilton who has more topical and incisive comments, Merton gets relatively fews laughs with his random comments that are thrown out there hopful of a reaction.

But as you correctly state, funny is subjective. This is just my perspective.
