Hi.Can anybody let me know if they have any episodes of this series or indeed, if they still exist?...It sounds like areally interesting series along the lines of Thriller.

Menace was a series of twenty-three plays running to seventy-five-minutes which found their basis in the aspects, perceptions and representations of menace in various settings in and around the villages, townships and cities of the United Kingdom
Out of the original twenty-three plays sadly only two survive in the BBC film & video tape library. They are ‘Man with a Mission’ (TX: 03/11/1970) and ‘Killing Time’ (TX: 10/11/1970) both from 1970.
Hope this is of help to you!

You need to be fast to spot this!
I would have loved you to have proved me wrong by producing two thought to be wiped 625 2€ Quad tapes containing an episode of Menace on each! Sadly since the tapes can be tracked and what they now have recorded on them proves that sadly will not occur.
Please don€™t feel €˜Menaced€™ by the power of my avatar. It just seemed to fit the occasion of the posted theme.
You know, given that companies can recover data from hard disks after it's been overwritten (because the head is never aligned perfectly so parts of the old data are left between recording tracks), I wonder if they could recover old shows from tapes that have been overwritten?
Probably not if the tape has been reused more than once, but it might be possible if it was only one. Though I suppose if they were thoroughly demagnetised between recordings then any old data would be gone; I'm not sure how they recorded back then.
Was Menace ever sold overseas?...
Sometimes tapes are returned from abroad..
I've got the 2 eps of Menace on dvd.
PM me if anyone's interested.
Cheers
Paul
Killing Time is one of my favourite pieces of television ever. It is unbelievably sad and disturbing. Brilliant turn by George Cole.
<Brilliant turn by George Cole.>
Too true we see excellent performances from him in 'Killing Time' and in the Out of the Unknown episode 'The Last Lonely Man'. Sadly he stayed in his role in 'Minder' for so long he is remembered more for only this!

I will do some digging, I don't expect it will be good news. It rarely is some 40 years after these programs were broadcast![]()
I believe not many episodes of this classic anthology series are in existence, have we confirmation of how many complete, individual episodes are in circulation? and if so, which?
I'd be interested in trading..
I have two (time-coded) episodes.
I'll check on the production titles and get back to you.

Intervision
Only 2 eps existing I'm afraid:
s1e6 Killing Time 3/11/70
s1e7 A Man With A Mission 10/11/70
I have both if you're interested in trading.
"Boys and Girls Come Out To Play" is probably top of my list of missing TV which I'd like to see again. A truly frightening play I remember and a great shame it's not around any more.
A publicity still of Sheila Hancock and Peter Sallis for the lost episode The Millicent Sisters, Edward de Bruno and Ruth:
Broadcast 27th October 1970. It clashed with the Armchair Theatre play Say Goodnight to Your Grandma, which, ironically, is on DVD.
What a great pic!.
Thanks for posting.
21 episodes of this show are lost forever.A tragedy...
A tragedy indeed. I originally posted this at Denise Buckley's thread:
Daily Mirror preview for 'Judas Goat', 22nd March 1973
THE BBC's drama output has been in the doldrums of late. Tonight they hope to revitalise things with a new series, titled MENACE (BBC1, 9.25). And the first play, "Judas Goat" by Jeremy Burnham, certainly proved a tough test for the actors concerned.
The play is set in a remote part of Scotland where Major Ryder (Geoffrey Palmer) runs open-air tough-guy courses to help men and boys discover the realities of living rough. Business firms use his establishment because his methods help to find the men best medically equipped for executive jobs.
The play concerns six executives who are set endurance tests to find the man best suited for a seat on the board. Lord (William Gaunt) is one would-be executive who is sent along to tackle the course. He finds himself really up against it - physically and mentally. The feminine charm is supplied by Alison Ryder (Denise Buckley), the wife of the Mayor. Also featured is Garfield Morgan.
A lot of the action involves rock climbing on the bleak faces of Aviemore in the Cairngorms. And it all played for real, with no stand-ins for the actors. The toughest part of all the filming was done during the winter. Said director Gareth Davies: "It's a common delusion that all actors are soft. Forget it - this play proves they're not."
