I've just received a DVD of the ITV series 'Spearhead' about the British Army in the '70's and one of the main characters is played by George Sweeney who seemed to specialise in 'hard man' type roles. He played 'Speed' in 'Citizen Smith' with Robert Lindsay and appeared in an episode of 'The Sweeney' basically playing the same character as he did in 'Spearhead,' anyway does anyone know what became of him?

I last saw him in Noah's Ark in the late 90s, although this doesn't seem to be listed in his IMDB entry. This implies he was still very much with us in 2007, as he was in Casualty (twice).

For some reason, I always remember him in a drama with Julie Peasgood in her TV debut: Cherryripe & The Lugworm Digger!

Here's George getting into a bit of bother with Insp Abberline in Jack the Ripper ...

... and looking a bit nervous in Noah's Ark.

He did an introduction for on The Sweeney boxset a couple of years ago..here's a couple of pics:

Here he is re-enacting his role of 'Cookie', still looking as menacing as ever:

He also appeared in Reg Varney's hugely underrated Best Pair Of Legs In The Business.

He was in TWO linked episodes of the Sweeney playing the same psychotic (gay) ex-soldier turned robber. They are two of the most violent and terrifying episodes - George can really do unhinged!

George is one of those actors who usually only has a small part in a TV programme or film, but you always remember his performance.

Thank you for that, alex - I certainly hadn't thought anything had happened to George at all.

Please tell him that he is still well-remembered and give him our very best wishes.

It was a surprise to see him as a junior solicitor in the original Rumpole play the other night. A rare sensitive middle class professional role for the old rager!

Just chanced upon this site and particular thead. I'm George's wife and I've just been reading him these posts (he's not computer literate at all!). He's is tickled pink that so many people still remember him and his work and would like to say a very big thank you! As our great nephew Alex said he definitely is not dead - although his career is currently not exactly on the rise but that's the same for most of us in this hard times, I guess.

Thanks again. If there's anything in the pipeline I'll keep you posted if you're interested!
