The Beatles' White Album was released 40 years ago today, their first LP since the death of manager Brian Epstein.

The recording sessions took place from 30th May to 14th October, 1968.

Ringo Starr walked out for two weeks. Yoko Ono appeared, for the first time, at a recording session.

The first (double) album on the Beatles' Apple label is remembered for several classics including:

Back in the USSR, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Blackbird, I'm So Tired, Helter Skelter and Sexy Sadie.

The album that featured Eric Clapton on 'While My Guitar

Gently Weeps' the first time (officially) that an 'outsider'

had performed on a Beatles track (other than brass players

or Indian musicians on George Harrison songs)

The trend would continue later with the inclusion of Billy

Preston on the ill fated 'Let It Be' album & sessions.

If I was spending that sort of dosh I would want more than word-of-mouth provenance. It isn't that difficult to fake this sort of thing. It's only a number.

"More than forty years after Christians were infuriated by John Lennon's claim that the Beatles were 'more popular than Jesus Christ', the Roman Catholic Church has made peace with the Fab Four.

"Today's edition of the Vatican's official newspaper says that 'after so many years it sounds merely like the boasting of an English working-class lad struggling to cope with unexpected success.'

"In a lengthy editorial marking the 40th anniversary of the Beatles' White Album,

L'Osservatore Romano heaps praise on the band saying only 'snobs' would dismiss the Beatles' songs."

I've got a "White Album" - not number 0000005, to be sure, but it's definitely White - should I start packing for that world cruise?

    What a great album.

It's what you expect from the band whose music and style changed the world.

I once owned a pristine limited edition 'Let It Be' boxed album with colour booklet.

Someone at work talked me into selling it to them a year or two after it's release.

I thought I was just helping out a fellow Beatles fan. I didn't make any money out of the deal.

I now believe that the same boxed edition is worth a lot of money.

I had the Let It Be boxed set too. The book binding was below standard and fell apart

Have a look in RECORD COLLECTOR magazine or give it a "test drive" on Fleabay.

    Anorak Alert !!!

Apart from the number, the early White albums were a bit unusual in that the sleeve openings were on the top.

Just played it all again. Fantastic.

Only the Let It Be export copy (on parlophone), with a top-opening and colour booklet is valuable

    The Times yesterday:

Vienna: Andrew Milton, a British professor in Linz, Austria, sold a copy of the Beatles' White Album for $24,550 (20,910) on eBay.

It had the number 0000005. The first four are thought to be owned by band members or their families.
