"A For Andromeda"?
1960 though
I saw this at the Saturday morning flicks many years ago.
All I can remember is the basic plot and the ending. I always thought it was called "The Black Cloud" and I also assumed it was based on the novel by Fred Hoyle, but I can't find any sign of a film.
Anyway, the Earth is going to be engulfed by a great big black thingy. At the end it is thwarted by firing every single gun, rocket, missile, catapult, kitchen sink at it.
To me the barrage seemed to last forever.
British + B&W

A for Andromeda was by Fred Hoyle, but the plot is quite different (if the recent version with Mrs Cakes and Kelly Reilly was anything to go by). An alien signal is received and decoded. It provides the blue-print for a computer that enables a cloned "human" to be created.

I think this is "The Day the Sky Exploded" (1958) which is actually a dubbed Italian film. The menace is a gigantic asteroid.
This is a definate possibility. The plot seems right. I would know if I saw the ending.

There used to be other films apart from Flash Gordon?![]()
The 'giant black cloud thingy engulfing Earth' was also the plot of an episode of the TV version of Captain Video.
