Film seen on television probably made in the 1930-40s where man and woman visit old house occupied by elderly lady (and possibly others). All I remember is that at the end the house burns down and the couple escape. We see the outline of the woman in the house. It could be "Rebecca" and I have mixed up the story but does anyone know of another film it could be?

    On another matter.

Remember watching a film many years ago with (I think) Robert Mitchum and Shirley Maclaine and I thought it was called "The Seesaw" about a couple having a relationship that went up and down! I was engrossed by the story, especially as I do not like either of the stars, but have never been able to find any reference to it in the film lists for either star. Tried cross referencing them but failed.

    Anyone help?

The first one could be Great Expectations though the fire isn't the finale of the film but John Mills and Valerie Hobson do meet at the ruins at the end.

The second film is Two for the Seesaw and does star the actors you mentioned.

Coincidentally, Two for the Seesaw was based on a play by the American author William Gibson who died just this week, aged 94.

Bloody hell, I didn't realise he was that old!!!

The first film isn't THE HALFWAY HOUSE is it? Or maybe A PLACE OF ONE'S OWN or CANDLES AT NINE?

Thanks for the solution to the mitcham/maclaine mystery. I will try to find a copy. Have looked at details of the three possibles for the burning house finale and they all sound like my sort of film without sparking (!) any further memories. I will investigate all three. Many thanks again.
