It could be Marcel Carne's La merveilleuse visite
Hi all,
I've registered here for one sole and selfish purpose - to find out if the film which has been haunting me for more than a decade and a half now really exists or not! You know how you gow up and certain memories from your childhood overlap each other 'till you are not sure if it's one event, several events or if you saw it on TV or if it realy happened? Well, I have a film like that. I don't know if it exists or not, I just remember the story line, and it goes something like this:
The scenery is kind of like Zorba the Greek, seaside, cliffs, village. An old man is riding a carriage along the seaside and sees something falling from the sky into the sea. He goes down and finds a naked man washed ashore, puts him in his carriage and takes him home. While the man is recuperating we find out that he is no ordinary man. For instance, he is unable to look at his own reflection. When he looks in a mirror it breaks, when he looks at his reflection in the water it starts to boil. In the end the villagers notice that something is wrong with the guy and drive him to a cliff and when he jumps off it he turns into a seagull and flies off.
That's all I remember.
As I said, it is quite possible that this is not even a feature, maybe it was a TV film or an episode of a series. I think it was in English though.
Anyway, if anybody could tell me which film this is I would be eternaly gratefull!!

Very much so - here is a review from Time Out magazine:
La Merveilleuse Visite Review. Movie Reviews - Film - Time Out London
The English connection is that it was based on a novel by H. G. Wells and was produced as a television play by the BBC in 1952.
Euryale.
It's in French, but maybe there was a dubbed version. I can confirm that this is the movie. Slightly corny in places, but haunting.
Wow! many thanks guys! That's a lot of help! I thought this film will haunt me till the day I die! Anyway, the only thing left to do now is deciding whether I want to destroy the childhood illussion of the film or do I want to watch it and possibly be disappointed. I think I'll opt for the 2nd option
Thanks again!
