with 3 versions of halleluljah in the charts ,the original ,a superior cover [ jeff buckley ] and a reality tv contestants version ,i thought why not have a thread on cover versions ,the best and worse . it might surprise some but roxy musics " lets stick together " is actually a cover version of a song that was originally done by wilbert harrison [ a blues singer ] . that must be one of the best cover versions of a song i think ,really made it his own did bryan .
"Blinded By The Light." Manfred Mann's Earthband did a better version than Springsteen did.
Ditto for Joe Cocker's version of The Beatles' "With A Little Help From My Friends."
"You've Got a Friend." Not a lot between James Taylor and Carole King. I prefer JT's version though.

He's an underrated talent. I could easily have added his version of "It's all Over Now, Baby Blue" as well.
I saw him last year, and he was terrific. I wish I'd caught him in concert at his prime. The trouble with these blokes with BIG voices, they often blow their vocal chords out - Ian Gillan, Brian Johnson, etc, etc.
The food was great, but sadly the restaurant is no more. I was a struggling young thesp at the time and only had just enough to pay the bill!

that "blinded by the light " is a superior cover . they really gave that song an overhaul compared to the bruce springsteen original which is a bit silly sounding IMO

pretty much any dylan song in the hands of someone who can sing ,ie roger mcguinn of the byrds is a superior cover in my opinion . i know a lot wont agree but hes a better songwriter than he is a singer is bob and i prefer the covers of his songs
the who doing elton johns " saturday nights alright for fighting " is terrific ! with the song being sung by roger daltrey , who is quite a hard nut , you can really believe he means the lyrics . more so than when elton sings it ....IMO
davidb , I'm not so sure Marvin's "Grapevine" counts as a cover ? They had something of a production line going at Hitsville and it appears to me that everyone pretty much recorded everything for their lps. Many Motown hit songs appear on many different artists LP's. If I remember correctly, Marvin's version was released as a b-side and the British dj's flipped it. Not trying to be nit picky as Marvin's version is much better than G & The P's.
