Is this a film called Crime Pays, directed by Christopher Monger around 1986? I think it was made for Channel Four Wales.

I`ve been trying to puta name to this film/play for 20 years. A Welsh taxi driver decides to leave his moaning wife and steal the cab firm`s takings. He gets the ferry to Ireland where he meets two young women. They befriend him and basically that`s the story!! Any ideas...please? Mark : )

I think it is about a taxi-driver from Pontypridd and may be based on fact. It starred the Welsh actor Ronnie Williams and the Ireland-born actress Veronica Quilligan, which would tie in with the Irish connection you mentioned.
